Some Favorite Building Products, Part 1

In a world with literally thousands of choices in every product category, we (and our clients) have favorites, and we are pleased to share a few. Some of these are available through Lindal, while others are excellent finishes available locally and online.

A Modern Railing System

Solid stainless steel rods will not sag (like cables do) The stainless uprights are beautifully detailed like none we’ve seen. Corners are connected with caps that are hinged to accommodate any angle. And the top is fitted with a handsome Lindal cedar cap. The system is appropriate for interior and exterior use.  The overall appearance top-notch modern. This rail system is a Lindal option worth saving for.

A Forever Deck

Decks are perhaps the most maintenance-intensive parts of a house. No more. Some homeowners have chosen synthetic decks as a solution, but are disappointed when they fade or sag or just look fake. No more.

IPE, a species of mahogany sometimes referred to as “ironwood,” has for decades been used commercially on marina and urban piers. The wood is literally hard as a rock and weathers naturally to a beautiful gray color if left unoiled. Super-resistant to decay and wood boring insects, IPE is as close to a forever deck as exists.

Lindal’s IPE super-deck option, available oiled or unoiled, is supplied in long lengths in a nominal 1x6 profile with softly rounded edges. It may also be installed with a neat under-deck fastening system that eliminates all surface-drilling and screwing of the wood for a blemish-free surface.

The 1x6 IPE cross section has all rounded edges. The left side is unfinished and will weather to a natural grey. The right side is oiled and will keep this look if re-oiled regularly.

A Stunning Hanging Light Fixture

Light should be used enhance architectural interiors (for example the beams and wood clad callings of a Lindal should glow at night), but that light fixtures should be as close to invisible as possible.

Exceptions to the above are decorative fixtures, like fixtures above dining tables or in large entry foyers, but even these should be subtle and unobtrusive and –if in volume spaces- should highlight (no pun intended) the volume itself. One favorite is the Crescendo Chandelier by Tech Lighting. Like a mobile, the seven arms of this fixture hold tiny lights, hidden inside folded “paper” shades. The fixture is available in two widths and two lengths and can fill a volume almost without being seen during the day, but at night are delicately spectacular. Available at Lumens.com.

A Smart and Subtle Suspension Fixture

Properly lighting an island requires even task lighting over the entire length of the island. If the island is in a great room, the island fixtures should not compete decoratively with the fixture over the dining table.

The Sonneman Thin Line suspension fixture, available in 4, 6, and 8 foot lengths and with upligthting in addition to downlighting will light an entire island evenly, unlike a series g h aging pendant fixtures that can create hot pools of light with darker spaces between. It's strikingly simple design does not compete with nearby decorative lighting.

The Sonneman Stix three or six bar chandelier is an ideal dining room or volume entry way mate to the Thin Line fixture. All are available at lumens.com.
