The Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 has touched every citizen of the planet. No individual… no family… no household has gone unaffected. For most of us it has been the event of our lifetimes.

Sheltering in place was the mandate of 2020. Most adults and all children were confined to their homes 24/7 for much of the year. Adults worked from home, and the children learned virtually at home. Many young working adults and college students returned home.

The notion of “home” took on a fuller meaning than ever before. Most existing homes could not accommodate every aspect of the shelter in place lifestyle; deficiencies quickly became apparent.

Small but important details required to support healthier lifestyles and to create healthier homes were wanting. Technology for a healthier environment — the next major event that will alter “home as we know it” is due greater consideration.

But most of the deficiencies of “home” relate to privacy. Privacy to enable work and study functions we never imagined in our home. And privacy to support activities that typically took place out of the home for each member of the household. Homes of the post pandemic era will shift the current balance of private and communal features and spaces a bit toward the private.

We believe that these needs and amenities to be addressed are the mandate of the future, the details of a new modernism. Designing to alleviate these needs will make fundamental changes to well-planned homes, changes that will make “home” a well-rounded place for more than “off-time” leisure.
