The delivery of every Lindal project is an exciting event. The arrival of sealed containers loaded with Lindal components is an exciting event, a tangible result of months of collaboration. And when the builder unloads the materials, the inevitable affirmative exclamation of the legendary quality of the Lindal materials is music to the clients’ (and my) ears.
This delivery to Southampton is particularly gratifying to me for a number of reasons:
- The modern custom design is a modern interpretation of a post and beam barn, roof and sides wrapped in blue metallic finish steel with ribs to simulate board and batten siding (and to reduce maintenance), the gable ends of the “barn” are open-jointed clear cedar, pre-finished to simulate weathered wood as are the pop-out projections from the barn form, and the recessed entry (to warm up the bold street elevation). In the interior, the entire roof is lined with clear tongue and groove cedar pre-finished in a similar “weathered” finish.
- This custom project is an affirmation of the efficient Lindal design process. From site visit, to my initial sketches, through the Lindal design development phase and pricing and the completion of permit plans for a one-of-a-kind design of this magnitude in four months is a timetable that cannot be matched.
- In a market where architect-designed homes often build for $600 to $800 per square foot or more, this home with architectural grade finishes will be completed for about $375 per square foot.
The greatest satisfaction, however, always comes from clients seeing the result if our collaboration being transformed intro a built reality that they love. There is nothing better than that.
