We are pleased to give you a heads up on the first series of system-built designs that respond to the most significant changes in our lives at homes since the end of WWII when modernism was introduced in America.
Mid-century modern introduced us to open floor plans, the flexible use of interior spaces and a strong connection of interiors to the natural environment beyond. These were revolutionary changes in design that enabled revolutionary changes to American lifestyles.
Since then, flexible communal spaces have become progressively more important. Great rooms have become progressively larger as has their share of the total spare footage of homes. In some modern designs, great rooms occupy as much as 50% of the floor area of the entire house.
In 2020, the pandemic forced huge changes in our lives at home.
With the heads of households working full time from home and students of all ages being schooled from home, and many activities being attended from home- book clubs, yoga classes, jazz rehearsals and piano recitals, school committee and towncouncil meetings to name just a few – truly private spaces for these activities were hard to come by. By “truly private” I mean spaces free of both visual and acoustic disturbance and not disturbing other activities taking place concurrently in the house.(How many such spaces do you have in your home?)
While the health crisis is over, most adults still work part time at home and participate in activities of all sorts remotely. The need for dedicated private space is here to stay.
Homes today are tasked with an increasing array of roles…trends in residential design are demonstrably shifting. .Research reveals the quest to capture and transform an area into an oasis of calm, quiet, and relaxation, is a wish that has become increasingly difficult to fulfill as homes are pushed to fulfill multiple purposes throughout the day and evening.

There have been other significant changes, the most notable of which is the greater desire for sheltered outdoor living in spaces large enough for the entire family to spend the day or evening. Lending credence to this, an annual survey conducted by Builder Magazine, revealed that the #1 amenity today in custom homes is an outdoor kitchen.
Living at home 24/7 made us all more aware of the cost of energy to heat and cool our homes. I believe as a result of this awareness, the share of our projects with photovoltaic arrays to reduce reliance on the power grid has increased dramatically.
Biophilic experts extoll the health benefits of increased time outdoors in nature and the use of natural materials, especially wood in residential interiors as means of creating calm, reducing blood pressure and creating a heightened sense of environmental responsibility.

Regular interactions with the outdoors have proven to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, expedite healing and improve a person’s mood and focus.

Innovation Lives Here
In a few weeks, Lindal Cedar Homes will announce the launch of the first system-built collection of homes that respond to the most significant changes in residential lifestyles in nearly eighty years. I am proud to share with you the fact that I proposed this opportunity to and was engaged by Lindal on the advent of the company’s eightieth anniversary to lead the in-house design effort this new collection of homes and to author the online portfolio that will share them with you.
This evolution of Lindal’s modern design ethos has been triggered by Lindal clients who expressed the desire for their homes to support certain new activities and then collaborated with Warmmodern Living and the Lindal design team to give them form.
The designs are a practical evolution of the mid-century modern concept of flexibility, with spaces that are multifunctional and features that accommodate every family member’s need for privacy. Houses that strengthen the connection to the natural environment in every season. Healthy and energy-wise homes that accommodate the increased functional demands on our homes efficiently, without increasing their overall size.
EVOLVE is the name of this first-of-its-kind modern series, offered as your new home by a company that has championed innovation for eighty years. A company named Lindal.
Stay tuned….
