Those words warmed me up on a near-zero New York night.

The subject matter is 2600 square foot home, overlooking a wooded pond about a half-hour from Seattle, that contains every item on the client’s ambitious wish list.

Modern design is a response to the major events of our times, Events that will have long-lasting effects on how we live.

The Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 touched every citizen of the planet. No individual… no family… no household has gone unaffected. For most of us it has been the event of our lifetimes.

The notion of “home” took on a fuller meaning than ever before. Most existing homes could not accommodate every aspect of the shelter in place mandate; deficiencies quickly became apparent.

We believe that these needs and design amenities to address them are the mandate of the future, the details of a new modernism. Designing to alleviate these needs will make fundamental changes to well-planned homes, changes that will make “home” a healthier better-rounded place for more than “off-time” leisure.

I could not believe my ears.

I recently called a local lumberyard to ask how long they held the price of a lumber quote for a house frame package.

“One day.” she responded after checking with the yard manager.”

“One day!?”

“One day,” she confirmed.

Dazed and confused, I called the local outlet of a major nationwide chain. Same response.

By the start of 2020, my practice had grown considerably in both Seattle and New York. I wanted to offer clients additional services e.g., landscape concepts, lighting design, and complete interior finish schedules, along with several services that relate to sustainability and green building. I also wanted to associate with a professional with whom I could collaborate.

When I left for New York last February, I didn’t have a clue that my life and the lives of everyone I know were going to be rocked by a global pandemic; that I was going be stranded in New Yok until July; and shock of a lifetime - the economic recession caused by the pandemic did not drag housing down with it. To the contrary, interest in building has mushroomed during this period of restricted logistics.

It was during this time that one of my Seattle clients introduced me to Tanya Nachia.
